Hey, what does that do?

Do you have questions about what chiropractic and therapy does?  Well, here are some answers!

Our office provides a non-addicting alternative that eliminates the complications of drug addictions, injections and or surgical intervention.

What does spinal alignment or adjusting do?

A chiropractic physician is trained to evaluate and correct vertebrae that are out of alignment by hand with a spinal adjustment.  An adjustment can help restore movement and function thru the application of gentle, yet firm, pressure to a the spine.  The goal of any adjustment is to restore the bone to its natural, or original, position, thereby relieving pressure on spinal nerves, organs and increasing function to the entire body including the immune system.

What does traction do?   The client lays either face up or face down on a mechanical table.  Belts are used to stabilize the body so that traction decompression is able to be performed.  For an average of 15 minutes, there is a series of pulls and relaxation repetitions.  Most clients will be able to fall asleep or talk on the phone during these sessions and find them comfortable and pain relieving.  Many clients ask us to turn it up!  However, we start traction at a lower poundage of pull and over those sessions the poundage used is increased as tolerated.  During these sessions, clients are able to shut off the machine with the mere push of a button which is in their hand during the sessions.    Spinal decompression therapy reduces chronic back pain over a series of sessions.  It is also utilized for:  Sciatica, numbness and pain in the legs radiating from the back, loss of reflex or sensation in the legs coming from the back, disc herniation, bulging discs, degenerative arthritis and more.   Low back traction decompression in our office has “fixed”  a disc herniation over a series of sessions.  We have pre and post MRI films to show as an example.  Please ask us to see them!

What does neck traction do?

We use the spinal DTS Chattanooga system to reduce neck pain, pain and numbness into the arms from the neck, disc herniations, headaches and more.   The client lays back on an angled table ( angled according to the nerves that are causing pain) and thru a series
of pulls over 15 minutes, pressure is reduced on the spine and nerves and there is an reduction in the hydrostatic pressure, thereby reducing pain and increasing movement.

What does Ice do?

Ice helps reduce inflammation and pain naturally.  Dr. Fallon prefers the use of ice when there is radiating pain into the arms or legs and or numbness in the arms or legs.  In addition, headaches often respond better to ice than heat.

What does heat do?

The benefits of heat therapy are undeniable. It can relieve stiffness and improve circulation by opening blood vessels- relieving pain from arthritis, tennis elbow, sinus headaches, TMJ, aching feet, shoulder and back pain, and many more conditions!

Dr. Fallon says, “  In my 25 years of practice, I find that  sticking to the following guidelines never failed.  “Use ice when there is an injury or swelling or when there is radiating pain or headache”.  “ For muscle spasms without inflammation or swelling and presence of localized or non radiating pain, use moist heat.

What does massage do?

Our massage therapists here at Fallon Chiropractic say, “ Massage comforts the nerves and allows them to relax.  Manual mobilization of soft tissues such as skin, muscle, ligament, and fascia, breaks up adhesions and re-balances muscle tone.  In addition, it breaks down lactic acid so that it can be flushed out of the body.”

In addition, massage helps restore flexibility of muscles and allows an easier, more effective spinal adjustment.

What does interferential treatment do?

Interferential:  Interferential Current (IFC):
A form of trans-cutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy in which high-frequency electrical impulses are introduced deep into the tissues near the center of the pain.  Treatment results in reduction of pain and muscle spasm.

Electrical stimulation is the application of electrical currents to specific
muscles through strategic placement of electrodes. It is often
used for neuro-muscular reeducation and decreasing pain through
nerve blocks, atrophy and muscle spasms while increasing range
of motion. It also reduces edema through sensory stimulation.  One long-term benefit of electrical stimulation can be the decreased reliance on certain pain
medications.

What does combo ultrasound/interferential treatment do?  Using an ultrasound wand, there is both ultrasound and interferential therapy thru the wand placed on the affected body part.  Most people love this therapy and it often results in an increased movement and reduced pain in one treatment.

What does ultrasound do?

Therapeutic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to
generate tissue vibration that creates heat in the treatment field.
Secondary effects from the production of heat include increasing
blood flow to tissue, which delivers important nutrients and
removes waste. When receiving ultrasound, the therapist uses a
coupling medium (gel or water) to transmit sound waves to the
treatment area.  Ultrasound is used during treatment sessions to reduce
edema, promote tissue and fracture healing, reduce pain, decrease
muscle tone/muscle spasms, increase range of motion, increase
circulation and remodel collagen.

What does the Active Therapeutic Movement Machine do?  ATM Back Project Machine?

The back project machine is used to reduce pain with movement in one treatment. This machine was listed as the number one way to reduce back pain in one treatment in the Journal Of Physical Therapy.   It works by resetting the brain mechanism that tells the body that there is pain with movement.   The client is strapped into an upright stabilization apparatus and is put thru a series of movements  while strapped in.  Afterwards, with a movement disorder ( pain with movement)  often, if the cause is merely muscular, a client will be able to move without pain.

What does cold laser do?

Cold laser therapy is a relatively new technology (about 30 years old) when compared to many alternative therapies like acupuncture (which has been used since 8000-3500 B.C.), chiropractic (since 1895) and physical therapy.
